biography

Recording music at home has been a hobby of mine since 1990, with at least one "album" completed each year since.  I play in many genres of music, but my default sound is 1990's pop rock.  My musical inspiration comes from R.E.M., Counting Crows, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, the Beatles, Beastie Boys, Crash Test Dummies, and many others.  My only formal training was 12 years of piano lessons.  Self-taught guitar, therefore it's nothing fancy.  But I record music for fun, not to create serious masterpieces.

Fishmonger

November 4th, 2011 + 11:11 PM  ·  MuneMud

I wanted to record a quick, fun song with an aquatic theme.  A couple of samples and guitar licks later, this song was born.  My daughter has a cameo at 2:08.

A sunflower wrapped in black and white
Electric eels providing rays of light
My mind has taken a later flight
And the king is aware of the talking

Empty net approaches the speed of light
Ignore the flash of the warning lights
- Alone and awake in the deep end
- Alone in the wake of my sleepin'
Slide along the surface avoiding birds of night
Underwater kingdom defended by carpet knights

Is it not for sale? Leave a beggar be
Is it not for sale? Under a money tree
Is it knot for sail? Something sent to sea
Is it not for sale?

A sunflower wrapped in green and blue
Electric eels provide a field of view
My mind is at the Rendezvous
Your pot of cold they reach into
- Alone in the wake of my sleepin'
- Alone and awake in the deep end
Slide above the surface avoiding fish of blue
Underwater kingdom defending me and you

Is it not for sale? Leave a beggar be
Is it not for sale? Under a money tree
Is it knot for sail? Something sent to sea
Is it not for sale?

The sun's power wrapped in cellophane
Electric eels are running the water train
Jonah's backpack got wet in the rain
And the king is aware of the vendors
- Alone in the wake of my sleepin'
- Alone and awake in the deep end
Slide above the surface avoiding sheaves of grain
The kingdom in the clouds is crashing down again

Is it not for sale? Leave a beggar be
Is it not for sale? Under a money tree
Is it knot for sail? Something sent to sea
Is it not for sale? A monopoly
Is it not for sale? Leave a beggar by
Is it not for sale? Move the tree aside
Is it knot for sail? Something sent inside
Is it not for sale? Something bigger than Neptune

Apologetic Scientist

July 26th, 2011 + 3:07 PM  ·  MuneMud

Here's another song I recorded last year.  It's my first forray into Science Rock with a little dab of politics.  After hours of vocal tweaks, I'm still not happy with them but I had to take a break from the song.  Let me know what you think...

In the science of matter composition is key
The central science is a crossroads laboratory
A chemical action, purification of me
Experiments on Adam and molecular alpha
Molecular beta, molecular gamma, x-ray

In the study of structure numbers are key
Abstract reasoning, prehistoric theories
A real quantity, the structure of me
Geometric living with natural numbers
Infinite numbers, cardinal numbers can fly

Hey, I'm sorry about the state of our world
But I didn't make it! And I didn't break it!
Hey, I'm sorry about the promises made
But I didn't make them! And I didn't break them!
I'll keep my research and you keep on cryin'

In the study of problems reason is key
From Babylon, Aristotle, and me
The love of wisdom and rationality
Philosophic studies in logic of language
Logic of religion, logic of mind over matter, of course

Hey, I'm sorry about the state of our world
But I didn't make it! And I didn't break it!
Hey, I'm sorry about the promises made
But I didn't make them! And I didn't break them!
I'll keep my research and you keep on cryin'

When I began teaching the students were louder
Departments were divided and the ceilings crashed around
Groundwork cluttered and the reason called in sick
Jupiter had been discovered
I throw my beaker to the chalkboard to get attention
To expel my new frustrations, abominations, and aggravations
A sabbatical from my mind

Let the science books talk

In the study of building structure is key
The golden mean in function, utility
The medieval builder versus contemporary
Form follows function in the building of man
The buildings of man, the buildings of man fall to pieces

Hey, I'm sorry about the state of our world
But I didn't make it! And I didn't break it!
Hey, I'm sorry about the promises made
But I didn't make them! And I didn't break them!
I'll keep my research and you keep on cryin'

Hey, I'm sorry about the state of our world
But I didn't make it! And I didn't break it!
Hey, I'm sorry about the promises made
But I didn't make them! And I didn't break them!
I'll keep my research and you keep on cryin'

Where the Wind Begins

January 23rd, 2011 + 12:01 AM  ·  MuneMud

This is my "instrumental with lyrics."  I had the music done and decided it needed a few lyrics, so I wrote them in a stream-of-consciousness sort of way.  Good luck at figuring out what this song's about.  I know the piano is a little repetitive, but I added a few extra sounds here and there to break it up a bit.  Anyway, enjoy...

You fell from a dream without a warning
A new memory found in the morning
Embracing a tree, a wooden mourning

Apart and aghast, slept in the desert
We touched in the past beyond the desert life

We will never forget clouds on the horizon
Borne of yesterday's wrong guesses
Everybody's eyes closed
Busy disguising and hiding the narrow road
Harbingers of pine to weather out the doubt
To whither with the doubters' last laughs
I've carried your thoughts over my shoulder
The winters call us home

Ghosts of Pompeii

January 20th, 2011 + 8:01 PM  ·  MuneMud

Are there many songs about Mt. Vesuvius here?  Well here's another one.  In this, the present-day narrator believes that he, in a past life, was present when the Italian volcano erupted in 79AD.  This is his story...

I don't sleep at night
I can feel the heat of the red light
In the shadow cast
From the northwest edge of the compass

I remember back in winter of 62
Sacrifices to Augustus and the spirits around us
Burning oil, bridges, houses broke in two
Sacrifices to the chaos around us

Wipe the ash from the bath
In the heated aftermath
Let the future do the math
Of the mountain's wrath

I don't sleep at night
I can hear voices in red light
I'm not alone in my room
Corners hide shapes of the trembled

The Younger's words written in a book or two
Sacrifices to Augustus and the spirits around us
Burning oil, columns, houses broke in two
Sacrifices to the chaos around us

Wipe the ash from the bath
In the heated aftermath
Let the future do the math
Of the mountain's wrath

Under Stabian Gate
I can hear whispers around me
Pliny narrate
And the tale of two doomed cities

In our world lingers Romans not alive
Sacrifices to Augustus and the feelings around us
Burning oil, bridges, families broke in two
Sacrifices to the chaos around us

Wipe the ash from the bath
In the heated aftermath
Let the future do the math
Of the mountain's wrath

I don't sleep at night
I'm awake from the stare of the streetlight

Seven Sisters

January 19th, 2011 + 9:01 AM  ·  MuneMud

I don't claim to be a singer, so I tend to intentionally bury the vocals a little in my work.  But then again, that technique was ingrained in me from listening to early R.E.M. during my musical formative years.
This was recorded with my computer, nothing fancy.  For more info on the "seven sisters", look to Saturn.

One time I stopped a summer
One time the sultry summer
One time a long time ago
One time a summer romance

Kari - a gentle breeze
Narvi - up in a tree
Hati - growled at me

One time I drank the ocean
One time the deep blue ocean
One time a long time ago
One time the ocean Janus

Bestla - an icy thing
Rhea - tenuous rings
Daphnis - a shepherd of all things hers

Take me, bake me
I wanna be dessert
Pack me, wrap me
A Secret Santa gift
Stop, drop, and roll me
Don't wanna be on fire
Wink it out and
Think about it
Just let me know if it's no
I'll try the next in line

One time I marked confusion
One time filled with confusion
One time a long time ago
One time her name became clear

Kari - born of the wind
Narvi - fair-weathered friend
Hati - the name says it all

One time I knew the garden
One time enchanted garden
One time a long time ago
One time the seventh knew me

Bestla - candy and wine
Rhea - flowers are fine
Daphnis - a shepherd of all things hers
